Memory is fleeting. And so we try to capture the past and the present. A face in a crowd, the light of the moon. Things one cannot hold on to.

Okay Lang
The elevator opened and we got in together.
K: Hey A, kamusta?
A: (smiled thinly) Okay lang.
It took me a moment before I realized what she meant. Okay lang can suggest many things: good, not bad, just okay, so-so. For a while you think that's not very interesting.
But when you really think hard about it, it's on a knife-edge of hope and despair.
"okay lang" seems to be the universal answer to kamusta. ask anyone. pero nagiiba-iba lang sa tone. i always share this in class pag intonation na pinaguusapan. wala lang. share ko lang din. haha
I agree with citybuoy. It's my knee-jerk reaction to kamusta, especially when (1) the one asking seems to be not that all interested to what I'm about to say; (2) the one asking just wants to hear something juicy; and (3) the one asking just wants to avoid killer silences. A particular emphasis on the third because I hate small talk.
Though sometimes, the fourth condition is when you're too eager to talk, but unsure if that person is the right one to confess to. And this is the hardest for me to deal with.
I like stories. Whether they're of random strangers or close friends, people's stories hold me spellbound.
Every story leads us to an insight: Who are we? Why do we do the things we do? Why are we here, and not there?

Hypocrite in a Pouffy White Dress Susan Jane Gilman
In her memoir, Susan Jane talked about growing up uncool as a white kid in a tough Puerto Rican neighborhood, dreaming to be a ballerina, chasing after rock stars, having sex for the very first time.
She brings us back to the best (and the worst) parts of our childhood and our youth, helping us realize things are never as good (or as bad) as we remember them to be.
Now Listening
For Emma, Forever Ago Bon Hiver
Justin Veron, also known as Bon Iver, spent four months alone in a log cabin in the mountains of Wisconsin after the break-up of his band, DeYarmond Edison in 2006.
"The name refers to someone in my past, and it's not her real name," Veron said in an interview about the title of his album. "The dedication is not just to her, it's about the end of an entire era. The entire context of my life at that time was tied to this person, and this record is a way for me to flee from this thing."
For Emma captures the sound of broken and quiet isolation, wraps it in a beautiful package, and delivers it to your door with a beating, bruised heart.

Ano ka ba, I am okay. =) It was A who wasn't okay.

Citybuoy,
It's the tone that spells the difference. That is why it is sometimes hard to capture that when writing. How we say things.
But then again, the great writers are able to do that.
=)

Manech,
I know what you mean. This usually happens when you are very vulnerable, and as they say, timing is everything.
