Okay Lang

The elevator opened and we got in together.

K: Hey A, kamusta?
A: (smiled thinly) Okay lang.

It took me a moment before I realized what she meant. Okay lang can suggest many things: good, not bad, just okay, so-so. For a while you think that's not very interesting.

But when you really think hard about it, it's on a knife-edge of hope and despair.

"okay lang" seems to be the universal answer to kamusta. ask anyone. pero nagiiba-iba lang sa tone. i always share this in class pag intonation na pinaguusapan. wala lang. share ko lang din. haha

I agree with citybuoy. It's my knee-jerk reaction to kamusta, especially when (1) the one asking seems to be not that all interested to what I'm about to say; (2) the one asking just wants to hear something juicy; and (3) the one asking just wants to avoid killer silences. A particular emphasis on the third because I hate small talk.

Though sometimes, the fourth condition is when you're too eager to talk, but unsure if that person is the right one to confess to. And this is the hardest for me to deal with.

Ano ka ba, I am okay. =) It was A who wasn't okay.

It's the tone that spells the difference. That is why it is sometimes hard to capture that when writing. How we say things.

But then again, the great writers are able to do that.

I know what you mean. This usually happens when you are very vulnerable, and as they say, timing is everything.
